Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Did You Know?” is a video that presents viewers with startling facts about the underpreparedness of America’s youth for the 21st Century (You can watch this video onYouTube.) I’ve watched this video numerous times and feel it is a call to action for me, as an elementary school educator, to prepare my fourth graders for the technological demands of the 21st Century.
47 million laptops were shipped worldwide last year. However, my classroom doesn’t have a single computer in it! That being said, I would like to bring my laptop to school daily. However, gathering 20 nine year-olds around a 15” screen isn’t practical. Therefore, I need to be able to present anything I do on the computer overhead. That’s where you come in… I desperately need an LCD Projector in my classroom so that I can show my students what the internet is (apparently many of them never heard of e-mail until I explained it to them on the first day of school), what a PowerPoint presentation looks like, etc. Though having one computer isn’t perfect, it’s better than nothing. Plus, with an LCD Projector, I will be able to make them Web 2.0 savvy. (My eventual goal will be to obtain a grant to get more computers in my classroom so that my students can create and deliver their own PowerPoint Presentations, using information they glean from their books and from the internet.)
According to Former Secretary of Education Riley, the top 10 jobs that will be in demand in 2010 didn’t exist in 2004. Therefore, we are currently preparing our students for jobs that don’t exist! Hence, it is incumbent upon educators, like me, to give students access to skills they will need to survive in the global workforce. Becoming familiar with technology is the best way I can help my students, 100% of whom qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch, get ahead.
Thank you for considering the purchase of an LCD Projector to help me make my students ready for the demands of the 21st Century.
