I am a Chemistry and Science teacher in a small,rural school. Our school educates a little over 600 Kindergarten to 12th Grade students. The main group of students that I interact with are Seniors. There are very few employment opportunities within our county, and students who attend college must use financial aid or scholarship opportunities.
The most positive opportunity in our area exists in the community college 30 miles away. This community college provides one of the most successful nursing schools in the state, as well as promoting many other medical field opportunities. In an effort to prepare my students for this kind of educational opportunity, I teach Chemistry 1, Advanced Chemistry, Microbiology and Zoology. These courses have proved to be beneficial to our students in pursuing careers in the health field. The only disadvantage seems to be a lack of hands-on laboratory experience.
Our school now has a brand new laboratory, but very little equipment or supplies. I have only EEF funds to purchase equipment and maintain supplies, which goes rather slow with less than $200 per year. I am requesting 2 triple beam balances which I feel will provide my students with the greatest educational benefit. These balances will be used in Chemistry for weight and measure in conducting basic chemistry applications and in Microbiology for measure in preparing media. These opportunities will benefit the students by preparing them for the lab experiences that they will encounter in nursing school as well as other collegiate academics.
These two pieces of equipment will provide the much needed practice to prepare my students for their first time laboratory experiences and to give them an advantage to succeed in their chosen field. Please help me to prepare my students for their future careers by assisting me in acquiring this much needed lab equipment.
