My Project

My middle school orchestra students are enthusiastic young musicians who are developing the skills and independence needed to become successful string players. For many of my younger students, especially those in 6th and 7th grade, tuning their own instrument is still a new and challenging skill.

These tuners will give my students the ability to tune their instruments accurately and independently every day.

The rechargeable clip-on tuners detect vibrations directly from the instrument, allowing students to tune even when other musicians are playing around them. They also respond to the wide range of pitches produced by orchestral string instruments, including the low frequencies of cello and bass.

My goal is for students to become less dependent on their teacher for tuning while developing their own ears and understanding of pitch. As their listening skills improve, students will gradually learn to tune by ear, but these tuners will provide an important tool as they build toward that independence. More efficient tuning also means less time spent preparing to rehearse and more time spent making music together.
