Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade Reading at a low income at-risk middle school. Our school has a limited number of clubs and organizations for our students to join.
I decided to begin a knitting club called Kids Knit. Last year was our first year and it was a great success! Members learned the knit stitch and the purl stitch, how to cast-on and bind off. Our member count topped off at 27 including boys and girls in the 6th-8th grades. This year Kids Knit would like to do more knitting for charity purposes. The problem we have is we are out of knitting supplies. We never had many needles to start with and our yarn supply is depleted.
In order for our students to continue to practice their knitting we will need a supply of yarn and knitting needles to work on their service projects. Knitting helps students understand mathematical concepts, creativity, and fine motor skills.
After the success we had last year I don't want to disappoint our students this year. They enjoyed the experience and felt like they were a part of the school through this club. You can help.
