Stories That Reflect Us

Help me give my students a culturally responsive classroom library with engaging books that celebrate Mexican and Latino cultures, identities, and experiences while supporting readers of all ability levels.

My Project

My sixth-grade students come to my classroom with a wide range of reading abilities, backgrounds, and experiences. I want every student to have access to books that are engaging and approachable while also providing opportunities for students to see their cultures and experiences reflected in literature.

A significant part of our school community has Mexican-American heritage.

I am working to expand my classroom library with books that authentically represent Mexican and Latino cultures, families, traditions, languages, and experiences. At the same time, these books will allow all of my students to learn about cultures and perspectives that may be different from their own.

I intentionally selected a variety of formats and genres, including graphic novels, poetry, contemporary and historical fiction, science fiction, biography, illustrated texts, and Spanish-language editions. This variety will provide entry points for developing readers while also offering challenging choices for students who are ready for more complex texts.

These books will be available for independent reading and will also support our English language arts instruction. Students will use them to explore concepts such as theme, characterization, perspective, figurative language, culture, and identity. Most importantly, I hope to build a classroom library where more students can find a book that makes them want to read—and where they can both see themselves and learn about one another.
