My Project

Our preschool classroom serves young children with autism and other unique learning needs. Every day, we work to create an environment where our students feel safe, supported, understood, and excited to learn. For our students, learning does not always begin at a table with a worksheet. Sometimes it begins with having a comfortable place to calm their body, a song that encourages them to participate, a story that helps them understand their emotions, or an art activity that gives them another way to express themselves.

This project will help us create more of those opportunities.

Flexible and sensory-friendly seating, including a large floor lounger and calming rocking chair, will give students choices when they need movement, a quiet break, or a comfortable place to regulate before returning to learning. These spaces are especially important in our classroom because we want our students to learn that taking a break and recognizing what their bodies need are valuable skills.

Music, storytelling, and art are also powerful ways for our preschoolers to communicate and connect. Musical instruments, an interactive sound puzzle, story props, books about emotions, paints, crayons, and markers will allow us to turn learning into hands-on experiences that encourage language, creativity, fine-motor development, social-emotional learning, and peer interaction.

We have also included snacks and drinks to help us support students during appropriate classroom routines and activities, along with cleaning supplies to help us maintain a clean and welcoming learning environment.

Most importantly, these materials will help us meet our students where they are. Our goal is not for every child to learn, communicate, play, or regulate in exactly the same way. We want to give each child different tools and opportunities to discover what works for them.
