Shapes You Can Touch: Hands-On Math in Motion

Help me give my students hands-on magnetic building tiles so they can construct and explore 2D and 3D geometric shapes with their own hands, turning abstract math concepts into something they can see, touch, and build.

My Project

Building with hands-on models is an activity my students love, especially when we dive into geometry. Using the workshop model in math, students gather in small groups to construct shapes, explore nets, and physically build the 3D solids we're studying, prisms, pyramids, and beyond. Being able to build these shapes allows me to see exactly how they're thinking through a problem and gives them an easy way to show and share their reasoning with the class.

What becomes a problem is that we simply don't have enough building materials to go around.

Right now, students often have to take turns, share single sets between large groups, or fall back on flat paper drawings to represent shapes that are so much easier to understand in three dimensions. When students are waiting for a turn or squinting at someone else's build across the table, it's distracting, and many of my students who already struggle with focus lose the thread of the lesson entirely. By having magnetic building tiles, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Students will be able to simply focus on the math concepts in front of them, and not on waiting for materials or working around a shortage. Plus, in a subject that can often feel abstract, giving students something they can build, turn, and see with their own hands will increase both their understanding and their desire to keep exploring math!
