A Cozy & Safe Room

Help me give my students a room that is calm (comfortable seats, noise-cancelling headphones, snacks) and a safe place to ask for help (tampons, snacks, pads, whatever they need).

My Project

As the special education teacher, many students on my caseload have identified my room as their "safe room" when they need a place to go while they are feeling dysregulated - and I love that I'm able to provide that. Having access to snacks, shower supplies, and hygiene products is so helpful, as many of our students don't readily have access to those things at home.

Last year, we (as a team) discovered that one of our unhoused students hadn't had access to a shower, and was refusing to go to class because their hair was messy/dirty.

We started keeping shower supplies and supplies to brush their hair in my classroom.

Many of our students don't have access to food at home, and snack during the day to stay awake and attentive. Many of our students come to us for things like pads and tampons. Having supplies they may not have access at home and being able to give them to them to keep (like deodorant to keep in their locker) is so helpful. A kid worried about how they look/smell is a kid who isn't focused on learning.

Noise cancelling headphones on days when we have fire drills and pep rallies are so necessary for some of our students with sensory overload issues.

Comfortable seating has proven helpful for students who are worked up, dysregulated, or crying to calm down in - no matter how long they need to use that space.

Middle school is hard for so many students - but a classroom that is prepared for the different struggles middle school kids navigate (hunger, hygiene, sensory overload) is a classroom prepared to help them navigate those struggles in a way that lets them access their education and learn new things versus just surviving the school day.
