My Project

As you enter what remains of our school's library/Media Center, there is an instant sense of something missing wrapped up in the nostalgia of what once was. Hundreds of kids enter and leave the library each day for a myriad of reasons, but it is a rare few who do so with an engaging read in their hands.

To today's high schooler, reading is a chore not a passtime, and if students are assigned to read, the books are almost exclusively fictional.

Now, more than ever, students need to be experienced in reading nonfiction and develop the analytical skills required to distinguish fact from opinion. They need to be trained to search for sources to strengthen their own rhetoric with strong evidence. If they are to recognize how rhetoric is used, especially against them, they have to read and analyze quality nonfiction with the support in place to help them engage and thrive. To be strong writers of nonfiction, they first need to be strong readers of it. They need examples to model their rhetoric after.

Our library is outdated and sparse. Gone are the days of weekly library trips in English class. I would love your help to stock my classroom bookshelves with nonfiction options for my AP Language, Journalism, and even freshmen students in English 1. Any class I teach will benefit from having these reading options. I incorporate independent reading projects in all of my classes to promote reading. In over ten years in education, I have witnessed how impactful just getting a student to read independently can be. I read a teaser from a nonfiction title every Friday to help incite interest and give them autonomy in choosing titles to read. These simple things pay dividends in return. Please, help me give them nonfiction options.
