Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I currently teach thirty first grade students at a Chicago Public School. Our school is located in a south side area of the city, and most of my students come from low-income families. The current social studies materials that we use in our classroom are extremely old and does not spark my students interests. My students groan and moan when it comes time for social studies because it is so boring to them. What I would like to do is spark up social studies. All of my students in the past have been extremely interested in the world and mapping. What we really need in our classroom is a globe! It is really difficult to talk about different parts of the world when you can not show your students where different continents and countries are. I am also asking for your help in getting my students a Geography skills learning center kit. This activity kit has over twenty different hands-on components that will allow the students to explore different geographical concepts like landforms, bodies of water, mapping symbols, and other physical features of maps. I feel that my students would have a different opinion about social studies if we had some new, up-dated materials to resort to. I know that my students would love working together to explore the world and all that it has to offer.
