My Project

My students are some of the most thoughtful, imaginative kids I've ever had the privilege to teach. Our small Title I school serves a wonderfully diverse population, including many students with exceptionalities, English Language Learners, and children of military families who move in and out of our community throughout the year. As my students get older, their ideas grow more complex — and they need a consistent space to work through them, revisit old drawings, and see their own growth over time.

A sketchbook of their own can be the difference between a student who erases every idea out of fear and one who lets it grow across the page.

Right now, my upper-grade students share scraps of paper and borrowed notebooks, with nowhere to keep their work together or to watch their skills develop over time.

Unfortunately, elementary arts programs like mine are rarely prioritized in school budgets, and upper grade students especially are often left without the tools to develop as young artists. A personal sketchbook gives each student ownership over their own creative process — a place to plan, practice, and reflect that isn't shared, borrowed, or thrown away at the end of a lesson. For my EC and ELL students, a sketchbook offers a private space to think visually and build confidence without pressure. With your help, I can give every student in my classroom a book that's truly their own, one they can fill with ideas all year long.
