Walking Wednesdays Pedometers Power Our Journey Across America

Help me give my students reusable pedometers and tracking tools for meaningful Walking Wednesdays that build fitness, wellness, and teamwork as we Walk Across America.

My Project

My four physical education classes include approximately 140 students with a wide range of interests, abilities, and fitness levels. They are energetic, curious, and most engaged when movement has a clear purpose. Because our indoor activity space is limited, I want to use our school trail to create Walking Wednesdays, a weekly experience that combines cardiovascular fitness, goal setting, wellness, teamwork, math, and geography.

A reusable class set of 40 pedometers will allow all 35 students in one class to track their steps without needing phones, smartwatches, or personal technology.

The same pedometers will be reset and reused by all four classes, while extra devices and replacement batteries will ensure that every student can participate. A numbered storage organizer and cleaning supplies will help protect and maintain the equipment between classes.

Students will record their steps, estimate mileage, set personal goals, and reflect on how walking affects their mood, energy, and overall health. Clipboards, reusable dry-erase sleeves, and journals will help students track their progress and complete short health reflections. Cones, trail markers, stopwatches, and safety vests will help us create an organized and safe walking route.

Our classes will combine their mileage for a year-long Walk Across America challenge. A large United States map and reusable markers will allow students to see their collective progress across different states and landmarks. Milestone tokens, stickers, and certificates will celebrate effort, consistency, improvement, leadership, and encouragement.

Walking Wednesdays will give every student a meaningful way to succeed, including those who may not feel confident during competitive sports. These resources will help my students build cardiovascular endurance, reduce stress, develop lifelong fitness habits, and discover that every step can contribute to something greater.
