My Project

Books become even more exciting when students know their opinions matter. Each year, the North Carolina Children’s Book Award gives young readers across the state the opportunity to explore a collection of outstanding books and vote for the title they believe should win. I would love for my students to take part in this shared reading experience, but we need copies of the nominated titles to make that possible. Throughout the project, students will listen to and read the nominated books, discuss characters, themes, illustrations, and author choices, and compare the strengths of each title. They will learn how to express an opinion, support it with evidence from a text, and respectfully consider the perspectives of other readers. Students will also practice evaluating books rather than simply deciding whether they liked them. After exploring the nominees, students will cast their own ballots and help select North Carolina’s next award-winning book.

Participating in an authentic statewide vote will show students that reading is not only a personal experience—it can also connect them with a larger community of readers.

These books will build excitement around reading, encourage thoughtful discussion, and give students a meaningful voice in recognizing excellent children’s literature.
