My Project

My students need mini kaleidoscopes and African masks to create engaging, hands-on learning experiences in IB Social & Cultural Anthropology and AP African American Studies. The kaleidoscopes will become a year-long symbol of examining the world through multiple perspectives which is an essential skill in anthropology. Students will use them throughout the course as a reminder to question assumptions, explore different cultural viewpoints, and think critically about what shapes human experience.

The African masks will support interdisciplinary learning in both courses.

In AP African American Studies, students will examine the cultural and historical significance of African masks, explore the influence of African artistic traditions across the African diaspora, and create their own masks inspired by what they have learned. They will also connect these traditions to the ideas of W.E.B. Du Bois, whose concept of double consciousness and emphasis on understanding identity help students explore how culture, heritage, and lived experience shape people's perspectives. In anthropology, the masks will serve as cultural artifacts that encourage observation, inquiry, and discussion about symbolism, ritual, identity, and the diversity of human societies. These hands-on experiences will help students connect history, culture, and identity in meaningful and lasting ways.
