From Sounds to Stories: Giving Kindergarteners the Tools to Read

Help me give my students UFLI Foundations and decodable readers to provide my kindergarten students with explicit phonics support and engaging opportunities to practice reading independently.

My Project

My kindergarten students are beginning their journey to becoming readers, and I want every child to feel the excitement and confidence that comes from reading a book independently.

As a teacher who has previously taught first grade, I know how important it is for students to develop strong foundational reading skills early.

Kindergarten is where students learn the building blocks that will support them for years to come: recognizing sounds, blending words, decoding new words, and understanding that they have the power to read.

I am requesting a UFLI Foundations manual and decodable readers to provide my students with additional opportunities to practice the skills they are learning. The UFLI manual will help me provide structured, research-based phonics instruction, while the decodable books will allow students to apply those skills in authentic reading experiences.

Young readers need many opportunities to practice before reading becomes automatic. These books will give my students the chance to read words they can decode, experience success, and build the confidence they need to become enthusiastic readers.

These materials will be used during whole-group instruction, small-group lessons, intervention, and independent reading practice. They will help my students move from recognizing letters and sounds to becoming readers who can open a book and say, “I can read this!”
