My Project

Kindergarten students are active, curious, and full of energy! They are also learning how to be students—how to focus, work independently, collaborate with classmates, and make choices that help them learn. Traditional tables and chairs work well for some students, but they are not the best fit for every little learner. Flexible seating will give my students the opportunity to choose a learning space that helps them feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn.

**When students have choices in where and how they learn, they can begin to recognize what helps them do their best.**
Throughout our day, students participate in whole-group lessons, literacy and math centers, independent practice, partner activities, and small-group instruction. Flexible seating will allow them to move throughout the classroom and find a spot that works for the task and for their individual learning needs. Instead of expecting every child to learn in the exact same way, I want to create a classroom environment that provides options for movement, comfort, and focus.
The flexible seating options in this project will give my students alternatives to traditional classroom chairs. Some students may need a seat that allows them to safely wiggle and move while they work, while others may concentrate best sitting comfortably closer to the floor. These options can be used throughout the classroom during reading, writing, math, centers, independent work, and collaborative learning.
My goal is to create a classroom where students understand that having a choice also comes with the responsibility of choosing a space where they can do their best learning. By providing flexible seating, I hope to increase student engagement, independence, focus, and excitement about learning.
