A Window Into Our Waters: Microscopes & River Tank Investigations

Help me give my students a hands-on science laboratory where they can investigate a living river ecosystem and use a professional microscope to observe the microscopic world, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world scientific inquiry.

My Project

My students are naturally curious and thrive when they can explore science through hands-on experiences. They ask thoughtful questions about the world around them and are eager to investigate, discover, and make connections between what they learn in class and the environment they see every day. Many of my students have limited opportunities to use authentic scientific equipment, so providing these experiences in the classroom is essential for building confidence, curiosity, and a lasting interest in STEM.

The Complete River Tank Ecosystem will transform our classroom into a living laboratory.

Instead of simply reading about ecosystems, students will observe how living organisms interact with one another and with their environment over time. They will investigate relationships between biotic and abiotic factors, analyze changes within the ecosystem, collect real data, and develop evidence-based explanations that align with North Carolina's 8th-grade science standards. Watching a living ecosystem change and respond to natural conditions will help students understand that science is an ongoing process of observation, questioning, and discovery.

The SWIFT Trinocular Compound Lab Microscope with a built-in camera will allow students to explore an entirely new world that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They will examine microorganisms from the river tank, investigate prepared slides, compare different cell types, and document their observations through photographs and digital presentations. The camera feature will also enable students to share discoveries with classmates, collaborate on investigations, and analyze images together as young scientists.

Together, these resources will create meaningful learning experiences that encourage inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Rather than memorizing scientific facts, my students will practice the skills of real scientists by asking questions, collecting evidence, analyzing data, and communicating their findings. These hands-on investigations will deepen their understanding of ecosystems and microscopy while inspiring curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for science.
