Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are taking navigation to the next level by learning and practicing with GPS. My students know how to use compasses and they learn about sextants in our marine biology and biology class, but GPS is a tool that I expect many will use in the future and I want them to know how to use a GPS device.

My students are very bright and creative.

They come from every background, every socioeconomic status, every language ability and varying academic abilities ranging from special education to gifted. Most of my students travel for more than an hour just to get to our school and that inspires me to provide them with excellent learning opportunities everyday.

My Project

My students participate in a navigation unit as part of my biology and marine biology course. We have a large and beautiful campus and we go on several fieldtrips, including boat trips, where my students will practice setting waypoints and reaching a set destination. This is a very practical and useful tool that my students should understand in order to increase their understanding of navigation.

If students don't enjoy nature, how will they ever feel inclined to protect it?

One of my goals is to help students feel comfortable in nature, and learning how to use GPS gives them one more tool to alleviate concerns and help them enjoy the outdoors. Your donation to this project could help my students become the next generation of stewards. Thank you!
