My Project

This summer, I had the great honor to be able to study in Chicago for three weeks at the Newberry Library, specifically interacting with the Newberry's extensive map collection. I was selected to participate in an NEH Institute for K-12 teachers entitled "250 Years of Teaching with Maps". One of the books that this DonorsChoose project is financing will provide my students with opportunities to engage with maps from places all around our world. Each chapter of "Prisoners of Geography" by Tim Marshall provides a standalone story about a specific region in the world, and these "stories" also talk about how the physical features of those regions have shaped those unique areas into what they have become today. In a world where map-reading has become a lost art, my hope is to incorporate global awareness and increase student savvy with map skills!

The second choice is a book from 2021 called "Klara and the Sun" by Kazuo Ishiguro.

With this choice, I hope to have some great discussions about the ethics of human-AI relationships. Students are increasingly using AI in many forms, sometimes without even realizing it! Is AI safe? Is AI beneficial? At what point do humans "no longer need" human connection from others? These are important questions shaping the thoughts of our teens, and I hope to be able to use this excellent, award-winning book to generate some deep thoughts within the classroom setting. Additionally, because my largest class size is 36 students, and students often lose books, that is why I am requesting 40 copies of each.
