Help me give my students a memorable experience learning how to use dissection tools from a NASCO Dissecting kit when we examine the parts of a fish eye.

My Project

Hello, My name is Christopher Murray and I am 6th grade Science teacher. As you know, Science can be taught by various modalities. My students are drawn to the kinesthetic learning applications of the subject. I love when I say "science lab", and they are overjoyed with excitement. I teach approximately 130 students everyday between 5 classes and do not always have the resources necessary for particular science labs. I am asking for donations to help fund the NASCO dissection kits necessary to complete our dissection labs. The kits include a scalpel, scissors, forceps, needle, pipette and ruler.

My goal for this specific project is to provide every student the opportunity, to better understand the uses and appropriate handling of the tools in a dissection kit.

Students are more prone to retain the exciting labs and hands on activities during their middle school education. For example, students are required to learn about sight and the main functions of the eye. I live on the coast so what better way to do that than to examine a fish eye. I know what you are thinking (gross), but you would be amazed how excited and engaged the students are during our fish eye lab.

A local fish market provides me with hundreds of fish eyes that students are able to dissect and analyze. The fish eye is closely similar to the human eye, which baffles students how complex and intricate of all of its parts, which allow us to see. We examine the cornea, retina, sclera, pupil, and lens using the dissection tools. Due to large classroom sizes, I would love if every student had the opportunity to do their own dissection. Please help me give my students the best experience with our dissection lab. Thank you for your time and support.
