The Case for SmartBoard Technology in My ELA Classroom

Help me give my students an Interactive Whiteboard that will launch them into 21st-century literacy instruction.

Ms. Smith Swansboro High School
Swansboro, NC Grades 9-12

My Project

Today's students will enter a workforce where digital literacy is essential. A SmartBoard prepares them by modeling the interactive, multimedia tools they'll use in college and careers.

Why This Matters

Using SmartBoard makes my thinking visible and give students a platform to demonstrate theirs. When I annotate a complex text in real-time, students see how skilled readers close-read. When students present at the board, they practice communication, receive immediate feedback, and learn from peers.

Transforming Learning

The SmartBoard reaches all learners simultaneously through multiple modes of engagement:

Visual learners see concepts develop dynamically and watch annotation processes unfold

Kinesthetic learners touch and manipulate content directly at the board

Auditory learners engage in discussions anchored to visual models

English learners access visual scaffolding that reduces language barriers

Students with dyslexia benefit from enlarged text, font changes, and direct annotation

Struggling readers engage repeatedly with grade-level content through interactive experiences

Gifted students tackle higher-order thinking through real-time, complex text analysis

Students with IEPs receive printed collaborative notes and accessibility features

Research Behind It

Dual-coding theory shows that combining visual and verbal information improves retention. Multi-sensory engagement strengthens neural pathways and deepens learning. Interactive displays increase on-task behavior, reduce disruptions, and boost critical thinking skills.

Rather than creating separate lessons for different learners, the SmartBoard enables one rich, universally accessible lesson. I can differentiate in real-time—adjusting text size, pacing, and feedback—without singling out students. This is equitable, inclusive instruction grounded in neuroscience and Universal Design for Learning principles.

My Commitment

As an educator committed to evidence-based instruction, I will use this tool strategically—not as a novelty, but as a foundation for 21st-century literacy instruction that meets every student where they are. The SmartBoard isn't an add-on. It's a foundation for 21st-century literacy instruction.
