My project needs two basic sewing machines that have several stitches and buttonhole capability, the thread and needles to support the machines, and hand sewing needles for portions of the project that can not be sewn by machine.
As a young girl growing up, I remember taking sewing lessons at the local park and working with my mother on costumes, doll clothes, and prom dresses. Today, students are often not taught these skills at home and I think they are so necessary, whether it is as simple as replacing a lost button, sewing a hem, or making a simple outfit.
I would like to teach small groups of 6th through 8th grade students basic sewing skills, by hand and with a sewing machine as part of an after school program. Once the students have become proficient, they can participate in the costume crew for the elementary school musical which is held in spring. With the purchase of two basic sewing machines, fabric scissors, and assorted supplies, this project will introduce students to basic sewing skills, using and altering a pattern, and sewing on a sewing machine. Not only are students learning life skills, they will be able to apply them directly when creating costumes for the school musical. Introducing students to sewing now increases their confidence, sparks creativity, and gives them skills they will always use.
