Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

First graders are curious, excited learners. They are at a sweet age where they truly enjoy coming to school to learn each day. My students live in a rural area, and many of their families work in our local agricultural industry. We have a diverse population at our school: a variety of languages, culture, and socioeconomic statuses.

My students love to gather around on our carpet while we enjoy a story together, discuss math problems, or partner up to share our thinking.

Unfortunately, my students often outgrow our current classroom carpet midway through first grade. It can get a little "tight" in December, and it feels like they are really squeezed in by May.

This new carpet would give everyone a little more elbow room, and the children would have a little more flexibility in how they are sitting without bothering anyone else. They would better be able to focus on what we are working on while being more comfortable in how they are sitting. The calming colors would also be a welcome upgrade to our classroom community.

We sit on our carpet during every lesson: to enjoy a leadership lesson to start a day, to learn and practice phonics, to read stories during literacy, to discuss and work through problems in math, to practice vocabulary during language lessons, and to practice new skills during writing. It really is such a major part of our daily learning!
