My Project

Early in my tenure as the school librarian at NHS, I realized focusing on academic readiness projects alienated a substantial number of our students who were not planning to attend college. Turning to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, I pivoted to hands-on projects that offer diverse ways to demonstrate mastery and build the communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills needed for post-graduate success. When given the freedom to create rather than memorize, our students demonstrated innovation and diversity of thought. This school year alone, recognizing the success of this approach, teachers brought half of our entire school population—nearly 1,000 students across 43 distinct projects—into the library to build, learn, and excel.

Our main goal for this project is to sustain our "Chopped Challenge," a high-energy makerspace twist on the hit Food Network show that turns our library into a hub for real-world readiness.

In this challenge, students receive a mystery bag of random items and a cardboard base, giving them just two to three days to MacGyver their way to a successful design. On the final day, students practice pitching their ideas and answering tough questions from a roving panel of guest judges. Recently, English students used this framework to build complex scenes from Shakespeare's The Tempest. While teachers love the development of soft skills, they appreciate the depth of academic mastery these students demonstrate when given the right platform.

To sustain this momentum, we need to restock our craft pantry with specific items like paint and structural materials. Having access to these supplies will continue transforming student learning. Instead of being passive consumers of information, these materials empower our Vikings to become active creators, building the confidence they need to walk out of our doors ready for post-graduate success.
