Bringing History to Life with Sophia’s War

Help me give my students the ability to read the novel Sophia's War to learn more about time during the Revolutionary War. This is a supporting text to give students more background information during this era.

My Project

My fourth-grade students are curious learners who love stories that connect to real life. I am requesting class sets of Sophia’s War: A Tale of the Revolution to help my students experience history through an engaging and meaningful lens.

Sophia’s War follows a courageous young girl living during the American Revolution who becomes a spy and risks everything to help her country.

As students read Sophia’s journey, they will explore important themes such as bravery, loyalty, sacrifice, and standing up for what is right—even when it is difficult.

This novel will allow my students to actively engage in reading, writing, and discussion. They will practice key comprehension skills such as analyzing characters, determining theme, and using evidence from the text. At the same time, students will build a deeper understanding of the American Revolution and what it was like to live during that time. Historical fiction helps students see history as real, human experiences—not just dates and facts—making learning more meaningful and memorable.

Many of my students have limited access to books at home, so providing class sets ensures that all students can fully participate in this shared reading experience. With their own copies, students can build confidence, improve their reading skills, and develop a love for historical fiction.
