Help me give my students a class set of charcoal drawing materials. Many students struggle to effectively practice values as it takes much time to establish with graphite. Access to charcoal materials will accelerate their learning immensely.

My Project

Access to charcoal materials will be an immense help in overcoming some of the common challenges facing young artists. Graphite pencil has been the standard for as long as we can remember. However, the precision and control necessary to generate the full range of value can be daunting for new art students.

Charcoal tools allow students to practice that precision by easily laying down the darkest values, blending out edges, lifting out highlights with eraser, and refining with more direct mark making.

Kneadable erasers provide a versatile tool for removing marks made in any drawing medium and is perfectly paired with the softness of charcoal. Students can broaden or sharpen the erasers to fit the shape that needs removing.

My students are quick to grasp the concepts of recreating shapes on the page. Having the ability to quickly and efficiently establish the illusion of depth through shadows, mid tones, and highlights will allow them to complete their initial fundamental training much quicker and help them move onto bigger and better projects that we all hope to reach in our art journeys.
