My Project

Fourth graders spend much of their day discussing ideas, explaining reasoning, and helping classmates understand new concepts. Our classroom uses a coaching model where students talk through their thinking, ask questions about each other’s evidence, and revise work together. The challenge is that meaningful conversations and problem solving are hard to sustain when students are uncomfortable or trying their absolute best to sit perfectly still.

Wobble stools allow students to move while they think, helping them stay engaged in academic conversations instead of becoming distracted by the need to fidget.

During peer coaching discussions, students can face partners, analyze work, and talk through misunderstandings. The gentle movement helps keep their focus on the discussion rather than on their bodies.

Students regularly guide teammates through math strategies, reading responses, science observations, and writing revisions. Instead of simply giving answers, they prompt each other to explain reasoning and improve ideas. Flexible seating supports these coaching interactions by helping students remain attentive, regulated, and mentally present.

This project is not just about comfort — it is about creating a classroom where productive academic dialogue can continue. When students can move appropriately, they listen more carefully, respond more thoughtfully, and stay invested in helping their peers learn.
