Third Grade Garden Project

Help me give my students garden benches, tools, garden carts, notebooks, and books about plants for hands-on STEM experiences that will develop responsibility through garden maintenance, and help beautify an area of campus that currently lacks landscaping and outdoor learning opportunities.

My Project

My third-grade students are curious, energetic, and eager to learn through hands-on experiences. They love opportunities to explore, create, and discover the world around them. Many of my students thrive when learning extends beyond traditional classroom walls and allows them to actively engage with real-world concepts. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. While some have had opportunities to garden or spend time outdoors, many have not had access to these experiences. They are excited by projects that allow them to work collaboratively, take ownership of their learning, and make a visible impact on their school community. These students are natural problem-solvers who ask thoughtful questions and enjoy learning by doing. A school garden will provide meaningful opportunities for them to develop responsibility, teamwork, perseverance, and a deeper understanding of science and the environment.

My students will use these benches, garden carts, tools, books and other materials to create and maintain a thriving school garden around our third-grade mobile classrooms.

Students will plant and tend flowers, vegetables, herbs, and pollinator-friendly plants while learning about plant life cycles, ecosystems, weather, soil, and nutrition.

Students will participate in every stage of the gardening process, including planning, planting, watering, observing growth, collecting data, and harvesting produce. The garden will become an outdoor classroom where students can apply science concepts through real-world experiences.

In addition to supporting academic learning, the project will teach responsibility, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Students will work together to care for the garden and take pride in transforming a plain outdoor space into a beautiful and welcoming area for our entire school community.
