My Project

My fifth-grade students have already experienced the magic of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and it has transformed the way they engage with reading. Students who once hesitated to pick up a book are now eager to discuss characters, analyze themes, and make meaningful connections. Because of this success, I want to build on that momentum by extending our unit to include Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Every muggle deserves a little magic—and a book that changes everything.

Currently, we have a class set of the first novel, which allows every student to actively participate in close reading, discussions, and standards-based literacy activities. However, without access to the second book, our learning journey stops just as students are becoming deeply invested in the story and characters.

With a class set of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, my students will be able to:

Compare and analyze character development across multiple texts (RL.5.3)

Identify themes and how they evolve from one novel to the next (RL.5.2)

Engage in deeper comprehension and text evidence discussions (RL.5.1)

Expand vocabulary through rich, complex language (L.5)

This project is about more than just books—it’s about sustaining excitement for reading and pushing students toward higher-level thinking. By continuing the series, students will strengthen their ability to track plot across texts, recognize patterns, and build stamina with complex literature.

Many of my students thrive when they feel connected to what they are reading. The Harry Potter series provides that connection, blending imagination with important themes like courage, friendship, and identity. Extending this unit ensures that all students—not just those who can access the books at home—have the opportunity to continue this powerful learning experience.
