I am a Kindergarten teacher in a public school setting. Each year 20+ children enter my classroom with varied experiences, opportunities and foundations for learning. It is my job to level the playing field and provide an equitable learning experience for all of my students and one of the ways I've been able to that is to involve families in their children's educational pursuits.
Due to the vast differences in economic status, level of parent education, resources in the home, etc, many of my children do not have access to developmentally appropriate literature in their homes. Without access to reading materials, families are unable to reinforce skills or cultivate print awareness.
In response to this dilemma, I would like to create take-home literacy bags. These bags would consist of familiar stories, puppets and/or props related to the story, activities (flashcards, activity sheets, and project ideas), a journal and any other necessary supplies such as paper, pencils, crayons, etc. These bags would be sent home with children for 1 week intervals to explore with their families. At the end of the week, children will return bags and share their journal entry with the class. Bags would be replenished over the weekend and rotated the following week.
In light of increased demands on our youngest learners it is necessary to involve families in our mission to create literacy-rich environments. By helping to provide the necessary materials for these take-home literacy bags, you are empowering families to take an active role in their child's education and leveling the playing field for today's youth.
