An Introduction to Biomedical Sciences

Help me give my students rescue essentials: stop the bleed kits, blood typing cards, phlebotomy practice kits, blood pressure kits, forehead thermometers, and folders.

My Project

Each semester, I introduce 60 new students into the world of biomedical science. My students are curious about future careers in health care, forensics, and technology. They love the labs where we learn to draw blood, and we simulate blood typing. They always want to know their blood types! And they love digging deeper into DNA!

In an unfortunately scary or unpredictable world, these students leave our class “Stop the Bleed” certified, understanding how to respond safely in an emergency trauma situation.

They are proud of this skill, and it leads to the desire to become CPR and first aid certified as well.

This equipment will replace older, poorly functioning items to allow more hands-on learning. Each year, we are provided with some equipment to demonstrate skills and give students opportunities to learn. Some items are expected to stand the test of time and 120 teenagers a year.

While phlebotomy arms, tourniquets, and blood pressure cuffs are not disposable items, they can only handle so many students before they start leaking or no longer functioning (no matter how well they are cared for). While we are blessed to have a budget that allows for some replacement items each year, we have found that the students do not always have equitable opportunities for fully functional equipment.
