Getting Your Hands Dirty In Biology

My students need 50 frogs for dissection to be able to complete a unit on physiology.

My Students

Think back to your high school biology class. You may remember learning a little about cells or photosynthesis but one thing's for sure, if you dissected a frog, you remember things about that day you will never forget. Due to budget cuts, my biology classes will be missing out on this day.

My school is in an urban area of San Diego.

Many students are involved in extra curricular activities and have part time jobs outside of school. These students have worked hard to maintain a high level of excellence at school. Most of the students enrolled in biology are in 10th grade.

My Project

Over the last three years, dissections have been an off and on part of the biology classroom. Last year was the first year that budget cuts stopped the classes from doing dissections, and the kids used pictures and diagrams to learn about physiology. This is never as engaging as actually seeing first hand what the body systems look like and how the work together.

Being able to dissect a specimen in biology is often a turning point for many students who are on the fence about continuing to study life sciences in the future.

For all students, it is a chance to learn more about themselves both physically by seeing how an organism works and mentally by working with a challenging subject.
