My students need 39 new books including titles such as "Tiger Eyes" and "Corner of the Universe" to read in their literature circles and at home in order to meet the State standard of 24 books per school year.

Girls! Girls!Girls! That's all I see at an Academy for Young Women in Oregon.I teach Language Arts to middle school girls who LOVE to read! Our students come from all over the city, yet, we are a Title I school. Our girls come to our school for rigorous academics in an environment that fosters a commitment to supporting our girls' endeavors to attend college.

As the economy worsens, books to read and enjoy are sometimes the last on the list of school supplies for parents and districts. Most of my girls love to read and I have provided a variety for them,yet, my resources have been stretched thin. My class library has diminished and our school library's selection is not very current. We desperately need new, high interest teen fiction.

With the donation of these books, you will give my girls a variety of new books to choose from. I have challenged them to meet the State standard of reading 24 books during the school year. They will read these books in class in literature circles, during 'downtime' and at home. They will respond to each of the books read orally and in writing. Reading for enjoyment helps students with vocabulary and writing in all subject areas,not just in English classes.

Your generous donation will insure that even my reluctant readers will get the reading fever! Research has shown that students who read often improve academically in all subjects.I want to instill the joy of reading for the future leaders that I guide and instruct! Readers are Leaders!!
