I am the library/media specialist in an urban school setting. I teach students in pre-school through grade five. Often, my students do not have an adult to read to them or with them at home. Many are missing out on the joy of recreational reading.

I have a volunteer who will read with a group of students during school hours. The students cannot afford to miss instructional time from class. So, we decided we would have a Readers' Cafe' where the students would gather during lunch time to read and discuss a book with friends and an adult to help guide them.

The Addy American Girl Series is an excellent group of books that will not only give the girls some historical information, but the girls will be able to relate to some of the issues Addy faces as a young girl. The adult reading with the girls be able to help the girls positively address any issues they may be having. My students need more opportunities to read a book with adult guidance. Readers' Cafe will be a book club with the focus on reading all the books in the Addy American Girl Series. The girls will meet at lunch time to read and discuss the books with four friends and an adult reading partner.

Your help with providing each girl with a copy of the book will make this reading experience even more rewarding. The girls will have a series of books that they can read over and over again and reflect on their experience as a part of Readers' Cafe'.
