Our Books Are Too Easy!

My Students

To my great joy, many of my students are reading above grade level this year. My twenty-two third grade students attend a Title 1 inner city school. They are acquiring voracious reading appetites, but they need more books to read!

I am blessed with a wonderful problem.

I have a classroom library with plenty of books for my students to read, but many of my students have "outgrown" my collection. In the past, my students have all been at or below grade level, and the books in my classroom are all lower level books that my previous students needed. This year, close to half my class are already reading above grade level (woo hoo!) but most of my books are too easy for them. I've tried to glean higher level books from other teachers around the school, but books are scarce and I've had little success.

My Project

We need a selection of fictional chapter books at higher reading levels to support the enthusiastic, expert-readers-in-training in my class. I carefully chose the books on the request list to meet the interests, levels, and tastes of the students in my class. (In fact, my students have personally requested some of these titles.) Other titles are books that I know my students will enjoy based on the books that they already read. I have checked to be sure that while these books are on a higher reading level, the content of the books is still appropriate and relevant for my gifted third graders.

So many of our resources often go to struggling students.

I am striving not to overlook the advanced students in my class. Your help will ensure that my top readers continue their progress with challenging books that are on their level.
