Light Up Our Lives with Circuitry Kits!

My students need light bulbs, wires, switches, and more to learn about electricity, force, energy, and simple machines.

My Students

It's time for science. Should we read about wind energy in a book and complete a worksheet? Or should we build our own windmills, test and rework our designs, then attach our windmills to small motors and try to light up lightbulbs? Which idea excites YOU? Hands-on science makes all the difference!

I teach 22 curious, gifted and talented third graders at a Title I urban school.

Seventy percent of students qualify for free or reduced price meals, and my excellent school has exactly zero dollars in our operating budget. We are provided with curriculum guides for reading, writing, and math - the three subjects that are included on the end-of-year state assessments. However, when it comes to science, the subject that my students are most passionate about, we are not provided with a single supply. To be honest, most teachers don't bother with teaching science; it is too difficult without materials, and it isn't going to be "on the test," after all. I simply cannot skip teaching science this year. So many of my students are interested in exploring science. Some are committed to helping the environment; others want to create inventions or explore how machines work. They ask me all the time if they can learn science in school, and I am committed to saying "Yes, we can learn science!"

My Project

However, in order to make this possible, I need materials and books to support our science lessons. To be honest, some of the books I've requested are curriculum guides. I need help planning out science units and structuring lessons since I am really starting from scratch. With these curriculum guides, I will have the support I need to begin to successfully teach science. Other books I've requested are directly for student use, nonfiction science books to provide background information to support our hands-on science experiences. After building circuits, my students will want to read to learn more about electricity, and I need to have books on hand to support their curiosity. Lastly, I need materials and supplies to allow for hands-on science labs. From switches to build series and parallel circuits, to pulleys to build their own machines. These are the materials that will truly make science engaging, meaningful, and fun for my students.

Our country needs more young scientists to stem the brain-drain and to support our nation's economic growth in the future, but despite all of the talk about science and technology education, we elementary teachers do not have the resources to teach these important subjects.

Please help bring science back into the classroom - your donation may inspire the scientists of the next generation!
