Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are two students in my classroom who have the hardest time sitting still. It's not that they don't want to - believe me, they do - but they feel compelled to move to stay focused.

This year I am teaching second grade in a low-income district in California.

My class is comprised of diverse learners, some of who are students with special needs who are fully included and mainstreamed into the general education classroom and 2nd grade curriculum. Students who enter second grade at my school typically have academic levels below the expectation of incoming second graders. Almost all of our students are English language learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch.

My Project

My students will receive a few tools to help them focus during mini-lessons and independent work. The pads will help my two active students sit on the rug while gaining their necessary stimulation. Then, instead of them worrying about staying away from others, they can focus on the lesson! When my most active student returns to his desk, he will be able to sit on his ball chair and focus on his work while allowing his body to get the movement it needs.

This project has the possibility to radically alter these two students' learning trajectories this year.

These are tools that should already be available to my students and with your support they actually will be!
