This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During the past year, it's gotten to the point where we have to have one student stand by the breaker box to flip the breaker when the lights go out. You can smell wire burning when the lights are on and our dimmer board shocks you when touched. Add this to having no side curtains and it's dismal.

The students in this drama program are used to going without... our school is Title I in a low socioeconomic area.

The theater program has become hugely popular, with now over 130 students involved, and without help, we will lose the ability to stage shows. These kids have enough challenges in their daily lives and should benefit from reasonable resources at least at school. With CA budget cuts and increased focus on remedial academics, the arts are suffering greatly. For many of these students, their electives are the only reason they come to school! Through drama, they are learning language arts skills but also something more...teamwork, self-awareness, public speaking skills, and technical skills that translate well into future employment.

My Project

With this follow-spot, we can keep public performances going by using the floodlight feature. This gift will last a number of years and will benefit many students. Until the state ed budget changes, we either make do or lose our programs altogether, so generosity and creativity are the wellsprings of hope for our kids!

Even if my program doesn't produce the next Broadway star, it has already produced in the three years I've served as director over 20 students who have gone on to community college theater after graduation.

This year is my highest enrollment yet, and I want to give these kids every chance for demonstrating mastery of their craft. I can't do it without your help, so thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity!
