Mathematics Portfolios Part II

My students need a die-cut machine, with replacement blades, mats, and other parts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in one of the few remaining giant high schools in New York. As a result I have an extremely diverse student population, with many recent immigrants from all over the world. More then 90% meet the guidelines for free or reduced-price lunch.

My goal is to give these students a firm foundation in math so they can continue on to college, sometimes as the first in their family to move on to higher education.

I face a student population which has been ill-prepared for high school mathematics. Their study and organizational skills are sorely lacking. If I expect them to continue on to college (as I do) I must help them learn how to structure their study in ways which help them review material long after we've covered it in class.

My Project

Part of this process is the creation of work portfolios. Students collect their work handouts, quizzes, and tests in an organized notebook which keeps it all in one place for review. I'd like them to personalize their portfolios, and that is where the die-cut machine I'm requesting comes in. The Cricut machine cuts out a variety of shapes and letters which the students will be able to use to decorate their own portfolio. By personalizing the portfolio, I hope they will take greater pride in their work, which in turn will increase the likelihood they'll keep material for review come test time. The colorful pens will also be used in personalizing the student portfolios.

Your donation will help my students learn organization, which is a vital skill for when they continue to college.

You will help me keep them engaged in the relationships and patterns of numbers, paving the way for them to continue their eduction beyond high school.
