My Students

These autistic students learn well when they are offered a hands on opportunity such as planting. They are able to see every step necessary in order to grow and maintain plants. They also experience socializing with others. You have the chance to be our leverage this coming year. We are excited!

These autistic citizens are in high school now and are given many opportunities to develop their vocational skills.

We maintain and multiply African Violets and Spider plants. We also grow zinnias. We start them in other classroom windows. As the students visit classrooms during their planning periods they get to know the teachers. This also offers many opportunities for them to get out and meet and speak with other students as well. These students are also able to be a part of every step involved in maintaining plants. The students are autistic and therefore not very likely to interact socially with others. They need many opportunities to practice social skills that most of us develop naturally. As the students of the general population look out their classroom windows at the rear of the school they see the flower garden. Many of them come by and tell us that they enjoy the garden. This is great for our autistic students. Our students need to to enjoy others socially.

My Project

The soil is the beginning of this wonderful process of socialization. We plant the seeds and place them in the windows of willing teachers. We never interrupt instructional time. We are on a schedule to avoid any interrupting of the educational process. That in turn serves to reinforce the growth of necessary awareness behaviors that they will need in order to work successfully in a formal setting. For example, it is never a good idea to barge into a room when people are in there. Even if your job is to empty trash/water for the whole floor of the building. This way they have many opportunities to notice that we never interrupt a class with people in it. This population struggles a bit to stay on task with efficiency. All of the steps involved in this planting process serve to teach the seriousness of performing a task correctly and therefore efficiently. For example, when we plant them we use only two seeds in a very shallow container. They learn this rather precisely.

This soil will set us on our course for a real social adventure as well as reinforcing the skill of following a sequential set of instructions in order to get proper desired results.

Every year we have had this project since I have been at this school. Our garden keeps getting bigger each year. Right now there is a beautiful array of flowers and thyme. As the students return to school they will see what their hard work brought. Other staff and students will compliment us on our endeavor.
