My Students
Kindergarten used to be a time for children to engage in hands-on exploration, discovery-based learning, and play time with education materials that foster content learning as well as social development. Educational trends that focus on standards and testing have changed this.
My Kindergarten students are eager to learn, excited to be at school, and love opportunities to actively participate in their learning.
They have an avid curiosity about the world and how things work and they want to talk about it! Kindergarten has become a very academic atmosphere and students experience a lot of direct instruction in order to learn phonics and master early reading skills. This type of instruction has its place, but my students' absolute favorite time of the week is choice time because it is the only time they get to participate in activities based entirely on their own particular interests and make decisions about what they want to learn or practice. My students are highly engaged during choice time and they would love to have some cool science materials to use.
My Project
I am requesting science materials that will allow my students to explore, become active learners, and make their own discoveries about scientific concepts. With the materials I requested, they will be able to examine magnified bugs, experiment with magnetism, explore what kinds of items sink and float, learn about the life cycles with 3-D models, and have fun in the process of discovery. Our short half day Kindergarten program does not leave enough time for formal science instruction, so my students would greatly benefit from materials that can be available to them for individual and small group use during choice time.
Please consider donating to my project to provide my 43 curious Kindergartners with opportunities to uncover the world of science.
Your support may help my students discover talents and interests unknown to them right now and who knows, the creative mind who finds a cure for Cancer might be a Kindergartner right now!
