Reaching Adolescent Male Non-Readers and Slow Readers.

My students need four eReaders in order to access grade level fiction and non-fiction material.

My Students

Did you ever hang on the fringe of a group wanting to be included? My students' reading disabilities prevent them from joining the hall conversations about great adolescent titles their peers are reading. They cannot discuss what they haven't read.

I teach reading to four adolescent boys.

They enjoy the same things as other middle-school students: sports, girls, movies and music. They are smart and insightful. They enjoy hearing about the plots of novels their peers are reading. However they do not decode well enough to tackle the age appropriate, independent reading material. Most of the students in my school are avid readers of a variety of genres. My four boys are often on the fringes of any conversation related to literature because of their reading difficulties. When I have time to read a novel to them they are always interested and making insightful comments. There is simply not enough time in the school day to remediate the decoding issues and read aloud current adolescent literature. My students want to be able to discuss current books with their peers but cannot.

My Project

I have shared with my students my own personal eReader and they have been excited to listen to the books I have loaded. Having access to several eReaders would enable each student to choose his own book to read and listen to. Being able to access current adolescent titles would allow my students to participate in the hallway conversations around current titles and increase their social capital. The hidden benefit that each boy does not realize is that each book he reads will increase his reading stamina, imagination and fluency. Each student's vocabulary will increase as a result of reading more complex material than what he can currently read independently. The ability to borrow from the local library and share between students means wider use of limited resources. Increasing the overall literacy of these students will greatly increase the likely hood that these four students will go on to graduate from high school. The eReaders will then be used over and over with other students.

Your donation to this project will affect the lives of four boys by increasing each students' overall literacy.

The research clearly supports that increased literacy is one strong component of reaching the goal of a high school diploma. Middle school is where students make the decision regarding whether an education is important. Donating to this project gives you the opportunity to change a student's life forever now and students in the future who will have access to these eReaders.
