This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember learning to write? I practiced on chalkboards, nowadays it's whiteboards, which are great. Except when you are a child that suffers from asthma and/or allergies. The white board markers have an odor, (even when they say "odorless") that gets a lot of my students coughing.

I teach all subjects in an all day kindergarten class in a high-need school.

I have 24 students. 91% of the students in our class are learning English as a second language. In our class 87% of my students are on free or reduced lunch, meaning these students are living at or below the poverty line. Although many have started school with outside barriers, you'll never meet a better bunch of kids. They work hard and are very respectful.

My Project

If we received the gel boards there would be enough for every student to have their own in their desk. In addition, we would also have extra for our reading and writing area. No more coughing when it was time to take them out to use. No more hearing, "These markers stink!" I could ask questions and then check to see if they understood by quickly looking around the room as they held up their gel boards. Everyone in the class can be participating at the same time!

I purchased 1 gel board to see how they work and see if it would be something that would be useful, with the intentions of purchasing more.

But with the current budget cuts in California, schools were hit extremely hard. Our district will not purchase items deemed as "non-essential". You donation will help my 5 and 6 year old students practice writing in a fun, non-smelly way!
