Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Communication is the key to a full life, whether it's speaking, sign language or picture exchange. I use all three methods when teaching my verbal and non-verbal autistic students in a special education elementary school. I teach kindergarten aged students all on the autism spectrum. Our school serves students diagnosed with autism from pre-k through 21 years of age.

Communicating your wants and needs is one of the most challenging obstacle individuals with autism face. Imagine trying to ask for the bathroom in a country where you did not know the language ( a mild comparison). My primary focus is to teach and work with my students and their families to develop functional communication systems. When my students get frustrated due to lack of communication skills they engage in negative behaviors (i.e.. scratching, biting, kicking, screaming, etc) Each family I have worked with has shared stories of how difficult it can be when their child acts out and they cannot figure out what they want. I have the training and experience to help these children and families develop communication skills but lack the supplies to create individual 1:1 instructional programs to stimulate vocalizations and develop the necessary pre-requisite skills to learning a communicational system.

We will need 5 sets of language building cards. These kits include two sets of photos of common items in the child's environment. With these cards I can create individualized 1:1 instructional programs to teach the students how to match, sort and eventually label the items based on the repetition of hearing the word and seeing the item simultaneously. Research has shown this systematic way of developing language skills has helped children on the autism spectrum learn to speak! In addition with the increase of communication skills children usually display a decrease in negative behaviors since more of their needs are being met. I have experienced this first hand, and seeing the joy in both the student's and families' faces makes all the hard work worthwhile.

You will make it possible for my students to have a voice!!!! Whether it's through vocalizations, sign or picture exchange, they will have the means to communicate their wants and needs which will truly impact their entire life both at school and home. I often think how powerful education is when I hear a child speak for the first time or a parent shares a success story at home, by contributing to this project you can be part of that power to change someone's life for the better!
