My Students

My students are energetic, opinionated, and curious about the world around them. In other words: my students are teenage boys. However, several of them cannot express themselves as they might like to. They can understand you, but not all of them can be understood by you.

The class is in an urban, public, generalized high school in MA.

The students are of regular high school age chronologically (14+); but their social-emotional levels vary from approximately age 7 to 10, and their academic skill levels range from approximately kindergarten through the end of second grade. We cover the general education topics of English, math, science, and social studies. We also cover the special education and autism-related topics of social skills, activities of daily living, pre-vocational and vocational work habits, etc. The program is new to the school and since neither the staff nor the building have ever before needed to assist or educate such cognitively limited students, there are minimal resources that truly meet their needs. There is also little understanding of how to aid their interpersonal growth within the wider school and general communities.

My Project

My students need technology to speak aloud for them, as they cannot speak clearly for themselves. With the students' cognitive, and neurological challenges come challenges in communication. Several of the students can talk, but others can either not talk or not be clearly understood. They, like all teens and adults, want to be able to independently express their needs, feelings, and thoughts. But several of them are limited to yes/no, and other simplified responses that I or others provide. Currently the students mutter sounds or partial sounds, and combined with gesture, the staff or other student has to guess what the individual is trying to say. The items I have requested, two different communication devices and the software to run the devices, are designed to give an auditory and expressive voice to these students. The devices are designed to provide differing levels and amounts of word-options for the individual student to choose from. There would be several different screens per device, and different word-option amounts per screen.

Currently, several of my students are restricted not by what they know or think, but by what they can express.

The devices I am requesting are intended to make a dent into those restrictions. I want each student to be able to have options of what and how to communicate with others around him. These devices give the students those options.
