Curious About Animals; Let's Read Non-Fiction Books

My students need 14 non-fiction books about animals in our school library.

My Students

Our students are curious about animals and are very limited when checking out books from our library. Two new series "Animal Extremes" and "Animal Offsprings" would be great for our students with reading levels 2.5-5.5.

Our public school currently enrolls grades Pre-K through 8th grade.

We have over 600 students; many of whom are eager to read something new. Our school uses the Accelerated Reading program (A.R. for short). Students take a test to determine their reading level and then check-out two books per visit from the library. Students will read on their own and access the computer program for a short quiz. Students will earn points for answering questions regarding their book. Teachers monitor each students progress and can change their reading level as needed. Students can pick any book in their level, but most of our students pick from the same genre each time. Our library has creative displays and characters of popular series around the room. I use lots of tools to encourage them to try something new.

My Project

Our whole library is geared toward the Accelerate Reader program. All of our books are shelved by book level, starting at 0.5 through 12.0; but our average reading level is 3.0-5.0. I created a special section for series that students checked out most frequently; including our animal books. Unfortunately, we only have one animal book series containing 25 books. After some research, I found two series that will focus on animals in new ways. "Animal Extremes" uses six categories to compare animals: cold, deep, fast, high, hot and old. Students will learn about many animals in each book with comparisons. In the "Animal Offspring" series, students will learn about the adult and "baby" in a set of 9 books. Both of these series will be great additions for the reading level and the interest topic.

Being curious is a good thing!

Expanding knowledge through reading is a great way to zone in on individual interests. Our students show an interest in animals, but our library is limited. With the purchase of these two new series, students now (and for years to come) can learn and feed their curiosity.
