This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students and I have undertaken the final novel in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We are armed with a delightful audio version of the text, but lack the time for listening. We need individual copies of the text!

I have a class of 26 avid readers.

Two years ago, I had many of these students as third graders. I read the first book in the Harry Potter series to them then (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), and their love for the series has only grown since. Many of them have read some or most of the Harry Potter novels over the last two years, and all have seen at least the 6th film of the series. Their reading abilities have grown tremendously over the last two years, and they are eager for literature that will both stimulate and challenge them. What better novel for them to tackle than Rowling's epic Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

My Project

Rowling's text structure is complex and surprising, her characters are supremely developed, the depth of human emotion is astounding, and finally, all of the questions generated on a journey lasting more than ten years will be masterfully addressed. Simply by being exposed to literature this well-rounded and complex my students will grow as readers and as authors. Additionally, pondering the philosophical and moral dilemmas posed in the novel will help develop my students' characters, as well as their abilities to reason and empathize with others. This is a novel geared towards educating children not only to read and think deeply, but to develop and maintain their own moral codes.
