I am a self-contained special needs general science teacher in an urban, charter high school. My class consists of 9 - 11 grade students with various disabilities such as autism, learning disabilities and cognitive delay.

My students struggle reading the science textbook so they need hands on, and visual representations of the very difficult concepts being taught.

These materials will teach the concepts through hands on, easier reading and visual learning experiences. The "Cartoon Guide to Genetics," paperback will be used in lieu of the textbook. This book is written in comic book form so it is a non-threatening way of reading a complex topic. The "Human Anatomy" transparency book the "Anatomy Coloring Book," will be used for a human body unit. The "Simulating Natural Selection," and the "Human Evolution" coloring paperback are books that will be used for a Darwin unit. All of the materials that I chose are to help my students with disabilities read and understand these difficult concepts since they struggle reading the textbook. These materials will support their learning through other learning modalities, such as visual and kinesthetic. In addition, these chosen resources are topics that the regular education science classes are learning. This will enable my students to talk about the same subject, theme and concepts with their peers in the regular education setting.

This project is so important. This will help my students learn difficult science concepts through easier reading, visual and hands-on learning experiences.
