My students need 30 copies each of 3 classic novels, including "The Wizard of Oz" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

My Students

Students learn to read through the textbooks but learn to love reading through novels. All kids deserve the chance to enter the imaginative worlds of classical literature.

My students all attend a title one school where over 95% of their peers receive a free or reduced lunch.

They are fighting to have an equal opportunity in and out of the classroom. Although they enter the classroom an average of 2 years behind grade level, they are all committed to growing over a year in reading this year! However, it is perhaps the English Language Learners who will impress you the most. Over 15 language are spoken in our Elementary School from all over the world. From refugees to first generation immigrants, these students go from alphabet and sounds to passionate readers.

My Project

Year after year students from this low income school will be able to break into literature circles and explore how to become better readers. Students will be able to apply strategies they learn in reading class (inferring, making life to text connections, identifying components of plot, etc) to these engaging novels. The stories within these books will transform the imaginations of students who sometimes need a positive escape from the harsh reality.

These novels are essential in helping my students become passionate on level readers.

The books will also help build background knowledge of classical literature to help put them on a level playing field.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
