Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students deal with intolerance on a daily basis. Through the use of these two class sets of books, I hope to broaden their ideas of what intolerance is and how we can use examples from the past to create a more positive society today. We will also be reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I will be teaching Novels in the fall, and there is not a wide selection of quality literature that I can pick from in our English department. I feel that supplementing more current texts with a Classic is a good way for students to see that intolerance happens in all societies and in all parts of the world. At the end of the day, I want students to take away a sense of fighting against intolerance and standing up for those who are oppressed. My students come from broken homes and live in extreme poverty. It is a hard thing to teach empathy with their home situations, but I want to try.

My students do not have the benefits of having a rich library to choose from. I continuously look to DonorsChoose to find amazing people who will help me fight that battle. I want my students to have the opportunity to have an opinion and a voice, and I think these books will create a great discussion and jumping board for them. These books will also help them deal with intolerance issues in the real world and help them to advocate for themselves as they move on to the college level.

I need class sets of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and The Kite Runner for my Novels class. Students will be expected to read these novels in-depth and in conjunction with the theme of intolerance, as is depicted in To Kill a Mockingbird. They will do a research project depicting an intolerance situation happening in Milwaukee and will be creating a gallery walk for other students in the building to experience. These books will help us understand how intolerance starts and what we can do as citizens to stop it. These activities will help them with discussions and projects at the college level as well.

I am asking any donor out there to consider donating to this cause because you will be benefiting my students in so many ways. They will be able to experience other intolerance and put their own experiences into perspective. Literacy is so important to my students going on to college and you will be helping them to increase their literacy and critical thinking skills. Overall, I feel my students are worth the amount of money being spent, if I had it myself I would buy them myself. So thanks for doing what I cannot, you are awesome!
